RE-IMAGINING

GIGER

Regarded as the foremost artist in Fantastic Realism, HR Giger explored artificial intelligence, robot futures and biomechanics in combination with notions of humanity and sexuality decades before they grew to be underlined by the materiality of our world as we know it. What stands out in Giger's work is his cross-breeding of human and machine, a kind of deformed offspring, human in shape but void of humanity, mechanical in structure but organic in nature. These unique blends of mechanics and humans are often referred to as “Biomechanoids” and this style of artwork has had a huge and long reaching effect in the world of fantasy and abstract industrialism.

Giger's envisioning of the human-machine continuum is far more closer to reality now than ever before. We witness systems that can mimic our mental capacities and, in some cases, even outperform human behavior. We have versions of the same artificial 'creatures' that Giger imagined, which can perhaps even engage with Giger's own work. It is only fitting that the most complex neural networks of today get a taste of what Giger envisioned them to be; because there’s some poetic justice in Giger’s renderings of artificial life being reimagined by artificial 'life' itself.
